GENERAL
Double 8 or Double run 8 film stock (same thing) is available. If seller is out-of-stock, ask if they know somebody else who is selling. Some seller of film stock also develop film. Ask. Some will give a discount for larger orders. Ask. Some will give a discount if you are willing to wait until they have sufficient amount of other people's footage to develop with the same chemical "bath." If they do, expect a discount for processing.
Buy sufficient amounts of the same film stock to complete a project. Example: a 10 minute film will typically need more than 10 minutes of raw film stock. Common shooting ratios are from 2:1 to 10:1. Amateurs filmmakers will shoot more raw film stock than professionals. Shoot 20 feet, end up with 10 feet. This is a 2:1 ratio. Planning on shooting and editing scenes as opposed to long takes. Allow for mistakes and errors. Shooting Black & White film stock is cheaper than color. Consider learning first with Black & White.
Process all film at the same time for consistency. After editing, you can have the film scanned to digital and then an a sound track and/or music. Plan ahead. Start with a small project, say one reel of raw film stock and learn as you go. Expect to make mistakes. Keep records of iris settings, film type and ASA used, focals lengths, backlight conditions, etc. Learn the camera's limitations.

Double 8 film is also called: Standard 8, Double Run 8, Double 8, and Double Regular 8. It is also sometimes called: Regular 8, or Standard 8mm. Confused? Not sure what to buy? Read more here on 8mm film standards at: 8 mm film at Wikipedia.
Regular 16mm film that works in a 16mm camera, has the same length and width dimensions as 8mm Double Run but is LACKING half of the perforations (sprocket holes). DO NOT USE! It will not work!
If the film stock has the word SUPER 8 on it, it WILL NOT WORK in an 8mm double run camera. SUPER 8 film stock has different sprocket hole spacing dimensions and a different width from standard 8 mm film. If it has the labeling or word: "Double Super 8", it will NOT work in Regular 8 double run cameras as the sprocket holes are 1/4 of the required size.
Double Super 8 film (commonly abbreviated as DS8) is a 16 mm wide film but has Super 8 size sprocket holes. It is used in the same way as standard 8 mm film in that the film is run through the camera twice, exposing one side on each pass. During processing, the film is split down the middle and the two pieces spliced together to produce a single strip for projection in a Super 8 projector.
